Crowns Q & A

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap used to strengthen or repair a damaged tooth. A crown is made to the similar shape, size, and color of your other natural teeth. These prosthetics can be used to repair a weak tooth or as anchors for a dental bridge.

Crowns can be made out of several types of material including:

  • Stainless steel
  • Porcelain fused to metal
  • Resin
  • Ceramic
  • Gold and other alloys

You can discuss which type of crown offers you the most benefits during your consultation with Dr. Itoafa.

Why do I need a dental crown?

If you have a tooth that is damaged on the outside, but the inside is still healthy, a crown helps protect it. Another reason crowns are popular is because they add additional strength to a broken or weakened tooth. They support teeth with large fillings and protect cracked teeth from breaking or chipping further.

What is the process for getting a dental crown?

Dr. Itoafa begins by numbing your mouth and preparing your tooth for the crown. He files, drills and sands your tooth creating enough room for the crown to fit over the rest of your tooth perfectly.

Next, he makes impressions and sends them to the dental lab. A temporary crown covers your tooth until the permanent crown is ready.

When the permanent crown is ready, Dr. Itoafa places it over your tooth and shapes it until you can efficiently chew and bite all the while making sure your new restoration looks as natural as possible. Finally, he cements it in place to keep it firmly attached.

How do dental crowns help my teeth?

Crowns protect the teeth they cover. In addition, they keep replacement teeth, called bridges, in place when needed by serving as sturdy abutments.

If you have a badly damaged tooth that needs repair, a crown is a sturdy solution. Contact Dr. Itoafa schedule your appointment at Dutch Creek Dental, or request an appointment online.
